Tesla Model X: The first SUV electric car in history

Model X is a sport utility vehicle that we’ve built on the same platform as the Model S. So we were able to do it relatively quickly and we’re able to build it in the same factory in Fremont as the Model S leveraging similar battery and motor technology. But with this vehicle, we’ve taken care of all of the great extremists that we had with model S into a different vehicle segments, into the SUV segment.

Model X electric car has 3 rows of seats, comfortable seating for seven people and still well over 200 miles of range (over 250 miles of range in fact). We also innovated a pretty interesting new door structure - really completely new door structure in this car. It was something again where a lot of people in the vehicle industry survey looked at this in kind of scratch their heads. So why would we try and do that. You know doors work really well and we looked at this and thought of trying to find a way that we could use modern sensors, modern actuators and really robotics to make a door experience that would let you have much better ingress and egress to the car. And with this Falcon winged doors, you can step directly into the third row seats and you can also open this door in an incredibly tight space next to cars were you may have packed beside it.

It actually has two hinges and a number of different actuators so the door can change its path when it opens next to an obstacle to avoid the obstacle. Sensors in the door able to see the outside surrounding and then change the way that the doors opening. Today that’s pretty easy to do with computers and sensors, but if you look at how a door works 50 or 100 years ago, it would have kind of seemed unheard-of. So it’s taking advantage of this new technology to do these new things.

This is also the first EV that has five thousand pound towing capability built in street from the start. Most electric vehicles people tend to think of is all there underpowered you. They can’t carry very much. This is the opposite. We can tow an entire vehicle behind it: a camper boat, all this different things and have a plenty of power to tow that through the mountains and accelerate in just the same way that you would always expect to do.
